How do I recognize influencers with fake followers?

Understand how to uncover fake followers, inactive followers, and mass followers to better understand the authenticity of your audience

The IROIN® Influencer Marketing Suite helps you identify and avoid fake profiles by providing powerful tools for analyzing audience authenticity. Even during the research phase, the Discovery module lets you check the quality of an influencer's followers to ensure you're only working with authentic creators who offer real value to your campaigns. This protects your budget from inactive followers, mass followers, or fake followers that could hinder your campaign performance.

Use authenticity filters in the Discovery module

In the Discovery module, you can use the Discovery Pro+ feature to directly filter the authenticity of your target audience to specifically find influencers with an authentic community. Set the filter to display only profiles with at least 70% authentic followers—a value considered solid. For even better results, you should search for creators whose target audience authenticity is above 80%, as this indicates particularly high quality. This filter helps you directly exclude profiles with a high proportion of fake or inactive followers and focus your selection on reliable influencers.

This has the advantage of automatically reducing the proportion of fake followers, giving you a more realistic assessment of an influencer's actual reach and engagement. This allows you to collaborate specifically with creators who have a truly active community.

Detailed insights through the Discovery Report

The Discovery Report provides you with comprehensive information about the composition of an influencer's target audience, allowing you to immediately identify potential weak points such as mass followers or fake followers. You can see the percentage of authentic followers and a classification of followers into categories: real people, other influencers, mass followers, or suspicious accounts. This overview shows you whether a profile is dominated by inactive followers or fake followers who could weaken your campaign. Additionally, you can analyze the engagement data to see whether engagement appears natural in relation to the number of followers. Low engagement with a high number of followers often indicates fake followers.

Significance for your campaign planning

Creators with many inactive or mass followers can significantly impact the performance of your campaigns because they don't deliver real reach or engagement. With the analysis and filtering features of the IROIN® Influencer Marketing Suite, you can invest specifically in influencers whose target audience is genuine, active, and relevant to your campaign.

How to identify potential risks before collaborating

We recommend that you request influencers' statistics before collaborating to get a realistic impression of their actual reach.

Additionally, there are some red flags you should look out for in the report:

🚩 Authenticity of the target audience is below 75% .
🚩 The proportion of suspicious accounts exceeds 20% .
🚩 Countries like India, Pakistan, Russia, and Brazil appear in the country breakdown , even though they neither match the ethnic background of the influencers nor their content.

These tips can help you identify potentially problematic collaborations early on.
